Do you have what it takes to save a life??
If so, then we’re looking for you!
The Ridge Volunteer Rescue Squad (RVRS) is actively recruiting new members from throughout our community. Our organization currently consists of about 24 active members. With the ever-rising population of the First District, RVRS is running an average of 2-3 calls per day, which has substantially increased over the past few years. As you may already know, our volunteer organization primarily provides free care and transport to those citizens in need of pre-hospital emergency medical treatment.
Our squad is made up of a variety of people; men and women of all ages. We are looking for those special individuals with the desire to help those in their community. There are several different types of membership within RVRS:
Active Member - An individual who is 18 years or older, and is no longer in high school. Active Members run duty on the ambulance at least 24 hours per month. These members usually have a set duty day/night. Active members may be EMTs, Drivers, or both.
Reserve Member - An individual who is 18 years or older, and is no longer in high school who is also affiliated with another rescue squad or department. Reserve Members do not have a set duty day/night and are available to fill-in for Active Members when an additional crew member is needed.
Junior Member - An individual who is between the ages of 16 and 18 years and/or is still in high school. These members can choose to have a set duty night, but are not permitted to run past 11:00 PM. Once a Junior Member finishes high school and becomes the legal age, they may advance their membership status to Active Member. The individual must maintain a scholastic average of a "C" or better. THESE MEMBERS MUST PROVIDE WRITTEN PARENTAL/GUARDIAN CONSENT TO JOIN. THIS MUST BE WITNESSED BY THE CHIEF, PRESIDENT OR SECRETARY.
Association Member - An individual who is 18 year or older and is no longer in high school. Association members assist the department in fundraisers and hosting numerous events throughout the year, but do not run on the ambulances.
Junior Association Member - An individual who is between the age of 14 and 18 years old, or over 18 and still in high school. Junior Association Members are not permitted to participate in squad activities past 11:00pm. The Junior Association Member must maintain a scholastic average of a "C" or better. THESE MEMBERS MUST PROVIDE WRITTEN PARENTAL/GUARDIAN CONSENT TO JOIN. THIS MUST BE WITNESSED BY THE ASSOCIATION CHAIRPERSON OR PRESIDENT.
Being a part of the RVRS offers many exciting benefits, including:
Free Training
You will receive free firefighting, rescue, and EMS training through the University of Maryland's Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute (MFRI). These courses count towards college credits through the state of Maryland and result in a National EMT certification or Maryland Emergency Vehicle Driver certification. There are also many opportunities for free training within the department (CPR, First aid, etc).
State Tax Break
Members are eligible to receive a $5,000 Maryland state tax break for being a volunteer if they meet minimum yearly requirements for 3 years.
Retirement
Through our Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP), you can receive retirement benefits from St. Mary's County after the age of 55 for service of 20 yrs or more, or after age 70 for service of a minimum of 3 yrs.
